Time & Chance is the memoir of David Clarke, a surgeon in the North-East of England.
Born during World War II in straitened circumstances as the only child of a war widow in the heavily bombed city of Kingston upon Hull, he was lucky enough to win a scholarship to a prestigious
school, followed by undergraduate medical and surgical training in Newcastle upon Tyne and briefly in the USA, leading to a consultant post in Middlesbrough for the twenty-five years until his retirement in 2006.
Along the way he describes anecdotes involving the many interesting, amusing and distinguished characters who crossed his path, together with digressions on surgical history, culminating in a summary of the progress made during a single professional lifetime.
